Nutrient Management Planning on livestock farms

Last updated: 03 May 2016

This presentation is by Peter Scott, Origin Fertilisers and member of the AIC Fertiliser sector Agriculture and Environment Committee. It was made at the FACTS Management Committee meeting in February 2016 with the aim of promoting the adoption of integrated nutrient management planning on livestock farms through crop nutrition and animal feeding advice (FACTS and FAR)

Summary of points made:

  • The feed and fertiliser industry needs to be self critical about whether it is doing the right and best job for farmers
  • Nutrient planning is more than a tick box exercise
  • It needs bringing together in an integrated way - with fertilisers and feed management within one nutrient cycle
  • There is an urgent need for the professional advisers to work more effectively together to improve nutrient management, and to increase financial returns which, in turn, drives environment benefit
